Why is Nitrogen better than just air?

The main benefit of nitrogen filled tyres is a much lower rate of pressure loss. Compressed air contains oxygen ( 21% ) and nitrogen ( 78% ). The smaller oxygen molecules permeate a rubber tire wall three times faster than nitrogen molecules. Under inflated tyres can result in decreased fuel economy, poor handling and excessive tyre wear. Typically at 20% under inflation fuel usage is increased by around 4% and tyre wear by 16%.
